Pulau Tioman

Pulau Tioman, Malaysia – 1993. In June 1993 we took our first of many trips to Pulau Tioman which is an island 32 nautical miles off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The island has lots of coral reefs and marine life so is great for snorkelling and scuba diving and lots of rainforest to explore. It has a hot and humid climate, with sunny afternoons and warm evenings but cool nights.
This is the southern end of Pulau Tioman.
This is the resort we stayed in. It included a golf course and diving centre.
Palm tree as seen from our chalet.
This is the main trans-island highway.
The local bus service.
This trail crosses the island West to East. We walked for about half a mile before the humidity and mosquitoes became unbearable.
This fishing boat had been abandoned in the tidal mouth of a small river.
This was one BIG spider!
This is the airport runway. It is very short and has hills at both ends. Takeoffs and landings are very steep and require a sharp turn.
We watched a number of planes land and takeoff and it looked like a pretty exciting ride.
This is the resort from a distance.

A good size example of a tabletop coral.
The number of sea urchins we saw indicates that this reef is in decline.
